Staying Alive vs. Being Alive

Remember the post a while back where I explained why dying from “natural causes” should be considered a major embarrassment. The message was that “natural causes” is always a euphemism for the predictable outcome when a person had long ago abdicated their responsibility for maintaining their health, or avoided living so much that their body finally got bored and quit. Neither of those is a very noble cause of death.

Historically in pre-agriculture times, people died primarily from accident ...

Stop Calling Medicine “Healthcare”

“I know you’ve heard this before, but it’s worth saying again: health is not what doctors do. “

Doctors do medicine. Doctors diagnose. Doctors do remedies. Doctors do emergency life-saving procedures.

That’s not news. Here’s what is news:

None of those things are health. Health is the stuff that keeps you from needing any doctors do in the first place. We fail ourselves when we get that confused.

Now for the really strange part: most people now believe that “health” is what ...

The Inconvenient Truth About Health

Can You Handle It?There is one over-riding principle from which all authentic health practices spring: you are the only one who can create health. If you don’t do what health requires, it won’t get done. Only something less will result when you attempt to outsource the responsibility to any other person, or to be otherwise uninvolved.

All authentic health is self-created.

99% of all contemporary health-related concepts and practices are designed to appeal ...

The Source Of Great Health Strategies

Where do great health strategies and principles come from? The answer may surprise you. But even more importantly, every one of us has a role to play in encouraging new and powerful health practices in our daily lives. If you didn’t know that your attitudes about health can either encourage or discourage new thinking on health, this post is for you.

The role that we all have to play in this process is who we choose to listen to. And why.

(Un)Common Health

green_peopleThe common concept of health is the absence of pathology (disease). And we have come to accept as the indicator of this absence the fact that we are not in the hospital or reaching for the phone to call the doctor. Seems like a pretty low bar for gauging something as important as health.

If you agree that we should be shooting for something ...

Stigma, or Accommodation

One of the few people with whom I feel entirely simpatico on the subject of human health is Mark Sisson – author of the Primal Blueprint. Yet, Mark published an article recently called the “Stigma Of Obesity” that I think deserves a closer look. I want to use this post to present both points of view for you to consider.

Please read Mark’s article here first.

Always a part of this issue that we can agree on is the need ...

Are You At-Risk Of Stupidity

It has been said (by me) that there are really only 2 things for sale in the world: survival and sex. The irony is that making survival your goal will also get you sex, but sex will not get you survival (except, perhaps, through your offspring). In fact, sex often gets you the opposite. The reason then that so many choose sex over survival is because sex is something we are biologically programmed for, and health is not.

That is the ...

If I Didn’t Know Better

If I didn’t know what I know, I’d be a vegan. Vegans have the best sales pitch, and the best science. I’ve actually lived with a vegan (a family member) and I’m more than a little familiar with all of the supporting data. It is some of the most compelling stuff I’ve ever heard on any subject. And completely useless to the cause of health.

All of the theoretical benefits of veganism are presented with no clearly stated goal or ...

The National Health Agreement

What is a “national agreement”? It is a conclusion on any subject to which most of us in the country will nod our heads in agreement. A National Agreement usually results from the widespread adoption of a notion regardless of facts. National Agreements get established by some person or persons of prominence making a statement that sounds like it should be true, or that is what people really wanted to believe in the first place, or some combination of the ...

Don’t Tell The Bee He Can’t Fly

An interesting story from history that we should all remember is the one about the aeronautical engineers who set about analyzing the bumblebee. They reviewed its construction, its wingspan, weight, body mass, size, and strength. They came to the scientific conclusion that flight would be impossible for such a creature. The structure and strength of the bee’s wings, according to the scientists, were simply inadequate to the task of supporting the bee’s body weight.

Good thing that the bee wasn’t informed ...
